One night in Long Beach in the '80's, I witnessed a real fireball, fortunately headed out to sea.  It was pretty spectacular, and I wondered at the fact that apparently hardly anyone noticed it, as I didn't hear anything in the news the next day.  For a meteor, if that is what it was, and not a large falling satellite or missile, it was moving rather slowly, and in fact took a good portion of a minute to go out of view over the horizon, but I could clearly see a central dot and flames trailing the main piece, leaving a fiery path of smoke behind.

From the description, “Obama” would be a great name for it. Here’s what I wish the prediction would read:

“A small, newly-discovered asteroid named 2008 Obama is approaching Earth and chances are better than 50.8% that it will hit. Steve Chesley of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory estimates that atmospheric entry will occur on November 4 over North America to the Red States. Measuring only a few meters across, the space rock poses no threat to people or structures on the ground, but it should create a spectacular fireball, releasing about a kiloton of TNT in energy as it disintegrates and explodes in the atmosphere. Asteroids of this size hit Earth every few months, but this is the first time one has been discovered before it hit.”

That reminds me of the scene in Armageddon, when the amateur astronomer calls in to report the discovery of the giant asteroid that will threaten to destroy the earth.

"I'd like to name it after my wife."

His wife looks at him adoringly...

"Because she's a soul-sucking b*tch, from which there is no escape!"

(Quoted from memory, so, may not be completely accurate)

O is its shape, its value, and its legacy, and "Bam!" and "uh-uh" are the sounds it makes.

99.8% that it will hit? Well, it's now October 9th, and I haven't heard anything about it. Evidently, that 0.2% chance that it wouldn't hit was realized. Curious.

Bill,
You haven't heard anything about it because everything else happening has been bigger news.  But it did hit.  (See here.)
Thanks,
Glenn

The meteoroid itself was not news, it was on the order of a meter accross, such bodies strike the earth many times a year. That it was detected before impact was the news.
