People are protesting and refusing to play against a team that has a kid who pitches 40 MPH fastballs - at age 9! He has never hit anyone and is very accurate as a pitcher. The problem? Kids can't hit his pitches and it's not fair!

It's an argument against child labor laws.  He could be getting rich in the majors.

This is disgusting. The wise thing to do would be to let Jericho Scott play in a league with older kids, and the Little League should facilitate that result. That would be good for Jericho, too.

Reminds me of the public's anti-hero campaign in The Incredibles.

I quite believe it could be retribution for his not joining the defending league champion - for whom I'd bet he could have played without the controversy.

When my children were at that age and playing baseball, there were two teams in the league whose coaches actively recruited kids long in advance of the season to load up their teams with talent. Their scouted players were encouraged to look bad in the try-outs, so that they wouldn't be picked by other squads, and could get picked by the 'winning team' . Consequently both teams went virtually undefeated year after year.

New Haven should be embarrassed.

While there is an obvious question of motivations, without better evidence, it amoumnts to jumping to conclusions to assume that this is a case of unfair discrimination against talent. Little Leagues are not adult organizations set up purely to showcase skill. That is why there is a maximum age limit in the first place, as an attempt to segregate by skill. There is no such limit in the major leagues. If this child is out of his class, the proper response is to offer to move him into a better class, which it is my understanding was done. That, and not insisting that he be classed arbitrarily by age, would be the proper response. There does seem to be enough going on to suspect "foul play." For instance, why was the kids team disbanded, and the players sent off to join other teams? But in any case, the principle of little leagues is not an arbitrary worship of age class, but an attempt to match skill levels. It does not seem to be the case that anyone is trying to stop this kid from playing. Rand said that it would be better to be a poor man among a society of rich men then to be a rich man among a society of the poor. It would be to his benefit to play with others of better skill, rather than to continuously beat others not as good as himself.

Interesting comment Ted - thanks for that.
