When my next renewal comes, I will be ending my subscription to REASON magazine. I have subscribed since 1994. I don't seem to have much time to read the magazine itself anymore, but do check out the web site now and then. Even though I haven't read it that much, I still felt that I should support it with a subscription.

The "final straw" was this piece of garbage on the web site:

http://www.reason.com/news/show/128200.html

It's an article defending the drinking age of 21. The author even hints at increasing it.

Some people tell me it's been going downhill since Marty Zupan left the magazine.

A truly awful article. Reason has been going down hill for years. I've been hoping, though, that new editor Matt Welch will fix the damage that Nick Gillespie did.

Are you canceling your subscription because the author wrote an article you disagree with, because the article was poorly written, or both?

REASON has been on thin ice with me for a while. It's not just this article. It's some of the stuff they've published over the last few years.

This article wasn't very good either:

I quit them two decades ago.  Unfortunately, that didn't leave much else in print to turn to.

In Reason's heyday, they were famous for their want ads, where every megalomaniacal would-be John Galt would post an ad for "The Answer."  These were often the most entertaining part of the magazine.  When they cancelled them, I knew it was downhill from there.

It was also indicative of the direction of the libertarian movement, which was to distance itself from the "crazies," and try to portray itself as a more consistent kind of Republican.  The LP was the primary vehicle for this sea change.  People were telling me about how they were forbidden to even mention in speeches at LP events any libertarian activity not part of politics, even though some of them were doing really exciting things.

As the communication channels became regulated and censored by the keepers of the faith, naturally all innovation died, a phenom which I referred to in print in 1976 or 1977, an article which was quoted by Erwin "Filthy Pierre" Straus.  Thus, answers to problems such as children's rights or original property claims, were never identified, and the problems were just swept under the rug.

It's been quite a long time since I've heard the name of Erwin Strauss. What's he up to nowadays?
