As a teacher in vocational college I went to an in-service training session headed by a professor at the University of Minnesota. She was talking about special needs college students -- students who needed much more instruction in order to get the same grade.

I specifically remember her fielding questions at the end and, in response to criticism about how her special needs plan would multiply the effort required from college instructors (with no big gains in), she proudly exclaimed the following bromide:

"It's not equal, but it's fair!"

I kept quiet in disgust.

Yes, Rev'rend, I should have said that. But she would have just said:

"By the standard of equality of outcome!"

... and then I'd -- not being able to exercise the restraint needed for civilization -- I'd have to walk up to her and punch her lights out in front of the faculty of my own and all of the other vocational colleges in the greater metropolitan area!

Imagine me (250-lb brute) knocking an egalitarian woman off of her feet like that in a fit of initiated violence.

It wouldn't bode too well for my prospective future. And, for this and other reasons, I kept my mouth shut.

Sounds like you have a social disease...

As in, "gee, Officer Krupkee" - West Side Story.

If you did punch this lady out, it would only be taken as proof that you must have had a BAD environment in which to grow up.  Time for some counselling.  ;-)

And maybe drugs.

Phil,

Now, now. There's no need to add injury to insult!

[If I had only blew my top, I could have gotten prescriptions for feel-good drugs ... damn!]

People reading this thread might get the wrong impression of me, so let me be more clear. I don't want to give the impression that I'm against the propagation of physical violence as a means for perpetuating objective justice in the world. Indeed, I'm a former vigilante!

As art can say so much more than words -- I am compelled to offer this in defense of that.

:-)
